Hylton's Paul Rischard Earns Excellence in Teaching Award
Paul Rischard of Hylton High School was presented the 2015 Excellence in Teaching Award for U.S. secondary schools by the American Association of Teachers of Slavic and East European Languages.
The award cites Paul as "a passionate teacher whose efforts promote that most important of initiatives: the teaching of Russian at the pre-college level. An effective organizer and selfless person who gives much to his students beyond the curriculum, Paul richly deserves this year’s award."

Standards of Learning for Foreign Language
On May 22, 2014, the Board of Education approved the revised Foreign Language Standards of Learning. Although there is no applicable SOL test associated with foreign language instruction, the SOLs are intended to provide students with the knowledge and skills to be able to interact, within reasonable limits, with users of the language and understand their culture.

Teacher Effectiveness for Language Learning
PWCS World Language Program has adopted TELL (Teaching Effectiveness for Language Learning) as the guide for our expectations of instruction in all world language classrooms. World language teachers are required to have completed various professional learning activities to ensure implementation of the TELL Standards. The Virginia Department of Education has adopted TELL and aligns all of their documents and professional development to the TELL standards.
The Teacher Effectiveness for Language Learning (TELL) Project is a collection of products and processes that can be used to enhance the effectiveness of world language teachers. TELL, which emanates from an understanding that student achievement is influenced more by an effective teacher than any other factor, attempts to synthesize work from the general education arena regarding those things that effective teachers do and make that information specific to the work of language teachers. The heart of the TELL Project is the Teacher Effectiveness for Language Learning Framework, which is supported by the TELL Tools.
